Product Review: Zen of Zins Wine

Ahh the joys of living in a DRY county. That would be NO JOY unless of course you drive 30 minutes to find it. Liquid paradise can be found, for a price, here in the buckle of the bible belt. There are very few good wine shops to choose from, but we are lucky to have at least one with a good selection.

On our bi-monthly sojourn to winedom, we came across a new (to me) wine from Ravenswood, which has been a long time favorite brand for my husband and I. This bottle of Zen of Zin is a 2007 old vine zinfandel.  I was skeptical, but drawn in by the clear crisp artwork and the catchy tag line ” The way to Zinligthenment”. Brand recognition did play a big part in the final purchase decision. I believe it was between $10.00 and $12.00 per bottle, which is about average for this brand. Good to know the kind folks at the Wine-O Emporium weren’t padding their cellars so to speak by over charging their less fortunate dry county neighbors.

The Ravenswood motto is “No Wimpy Wines” and they really do live up to their tagline. This particular bottle had a nice strong start with a smooth finish. It had average legs, but hey I can relate there!

I have purchased two bottles on different occasions and have enjoyed both. Is it the best wine I have ever had? No, but it is by far not the worst. This is an excellent every day wine (despite what the church might say). A nice bottle to take over to dinner at a friends. Great with pasta, beef and pizza.

I would say this is a must try for those of you who enjoy a good red zin and especially if you enjoy Ravenswood blends. The ONE complaint that I have is the SLOOWWWWness of the Ravenswood website. On a cable modem it took more than 5 minutes to load for this reveiwer. Since I do most of my research online, you can see where this might turn me off. If you have a T-1 at your disposal, go for it. Otherwise check your local wine section and save yourself the headache.

If you can’t make it through a whole bottle, I highly recommend my favorite Vacu Vin Wine Saver. Be sure to get the Extra Stoppers in case you drink a lot of wine or if things tend to get a little wild on wine night at your house.

This was a non sponsored thread, meaning that I used my own money to buy this product for review, and I have received no monetary gain from this post.

Lindsay Green is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to bath and candle products. When I opened my box from Lindsay’s Candles & Stuff it was a wave of unbelievably scrumptious smells!

I have always loved her packaging, it is simple clear cut and cute. Everything is clearly labeled which I really like. My box had a soap, three wax melts and a lip balm.

I took these products on the RV with me when we moved across country, and have toted them a long way. The Orange Lip Balm was a savior on the road as we moved from one extreme temperature to another, plus the AC blowing in your face for 14 hours a day, did not leave my skin in great shape. I don’t know what I would have done without this balm. When Lindsay says orange, she means ORANGE. It tastes fresh squeezed and provides great moisturizing while leaving just a little shine behind. For $2.50 Canadian, you really can’t beat this Lip Balm.

The most amazing bar of soap kept us both going through those long days. The Wake Me Up Soap Bar did just that each morning at the KOA! It has pure essential oils of eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon and wintergreen in it. It is all natural and provides just the right kick to get your day started right. This is one bar of soap that is on my must have list. The other bonus is that it doesn’t dry out my skin like other natural soaps I have tried in the past. So, an A+ to Lindsay!

Moving right along to my favorite addiction….Wax Melts! I actually burned these in the house the last few days right before we moved, and was super sad to see the last one go. The first one was Cinnamon Buns. WOW! It was strong and lasted all day (as in 24 hours) and filled the house up. Now this is a scent that is typically hit and miss with most e-tailers. Not so with Lindsay’s Candles & Stuff. It was dead on, and didn’t have any bizarre after scent. Next was the Warm Apple Pie melt. I am drooling thinking about that tart. It is on my MUST buy tart list. You can quote me when I say…It is so freaking good! Now, the Jamaica Me Crazy melt was intense. Very fruity/tropical. Again excellent scent throw that lasted into the next day. I would buy this one in bulk too. It was that yummy. The neat thing about these Wax Melts is you can actually get them color coordinated to your preference to match your rooms. LOL, how cool is that?

When it comes to service and quality, Lindsay’s Candles & Stuff simply cannot be beat. If you are balking at ordering from a Canadian company, do not hesitate, run to the border, cross and BUY people. If you don’t, you are missing out.

Arrrggghhhh me hearties! I have quite the treasure trove to share with you today! I have sailed (ok surfed) the seven seas (read internet) for treasures near and dear to me heart lasses. At The Mom Lady’s Beauty Booty there be treasure! My hoard of goodies has traveled all the way from the Emerald City to the wilds of KY (the state not the Jelly), and they have not fared well. As in, the loot is almost GONE. I have to switch back to my regular persona, cause the pirate talk is giving me a headache. LOL

I received an amazing gift basket packed full of delights. Here’s what was in the basket, then I will hit the highlights. Three shower gels, 4 lip balms, 1 body lotions (one HUGE, one small), a rubber ducky AND a fish shaped nail brush. To say that owner Elaine Neetz went all out for me is an understatement. This fine lady knows how to build a truly dreamy gift basket.

Lets talk about the packaging. Simple from the word go, which I like. Lets face it folks, I am not in the shower for a tea party. I need product packaging that holds up and it doesn’t have to be super fancy. Everything is clearly labeled with the ingredients and the scent. And of course adorned with the oh so cute and piratey Mom Lady’s logo. The only thing I didn’t care for was the small lotion bottle, it was a super stiff plastic that was hard for me to squeeze. Nor did I like the large lotion that was in a jar. It was the same stuff, just in a jar. I am a squeezer not a scooper when it comes to lotion. Don’t like getting it under my nails. Then have to wash my hands to get the stuff out. Which then leaves me with no lotion on my hands again.

Now, on to the actual lotion. It is a medium thickness lotion that goes on smooth and is not greasy feeling at all. It looks slightly grainy, but you do NOT feel that aspect at all. The scenting on the Veggie Fruit Fruit lotion jar was medium, and the cucumber melon tended to linger (in a good way). The little bottle was unscented Shea’s Buttered Buns lotion. So, as far as lotion goes, it gets an A.

Moving on to the shower gels. Now, I am not a huge fan of shower gels, but these were really quite lovely. The consistency is thin to medium. In actuality for me, this was a perfect thickness, not so thin it was runny and not so thick that it is hard to squeeze out. The scents were fantastic. Again, Cucumber Melon, then a Vanilla Buttercream that is to die for. Followed by Tropical Sunset which is a fruity clean scent. These shower Gels get an A in my book.

My favorite part of the basket was the lip balms. FOUR to feed my lip addiction. I was not disappointed. The flavors were Granny’s Green Apple, tart and yummy, a definite re-order. Cherries Jubilee, another winner a perfect balance of jubilant cherries. Thumpin’ Good Watermelon, in a word YUM. Last but not least, A lil’ Tipsy which is supposed to taste like a wine cooler. It didn’t really remind of that (thankfully) but was a good flavor just the same. These balms glide on smooth and stay on to provide good moisture barriers.

All in all, I have enjoyed my loot from The Mom Lady’s Beauty Booty, and would buy her products in the future. She’s got an incredible selection, good solid products and excellent customer service.

Picture if you will, another time, another space…another dimension. The airport zone. Not just any zone, but the hell on earth also fondly called baggage claim. This zone is filled with black holes and sticky fingers, it is a place that nobody is safe. That was until I discovered BIN HOG! Now I have seen a lot of cool stuff online and on the TnV shows, but these bad boys really take the cake.

Check this out:

These versatile “tags” mark your luggage with a unique design making them easy to spot on that conveyor belt or in somebody else’s possession! They are also comfy and add a really nice little extra layer to those hard and often uncomfortable handles on baggage. They are BRIGHT too. You can opt for a more subtle look on your bags with say, black. But, hey when you are trying to stand out in the crowd, go for neon pink or green like I did. Add a skull and crossbones and you are all set!

Each one is manufactured, and embroidered by Rita, so, the quality is top gun errr top notch even! You can get them customized with your name too. Just let her know what you want and she will zip it right out. Now, I don’t get to travel as much as I would like, but that didn’t stop me from getting several of these wraps. I have one on my laptop bag, gave one (the red OM symbol) to my hubby for his laptop bag AND his work briefcase which has cloth handles. Of course there is the neon pink Yin/Yang symbol on my flight bag. We have been taking our laptops out and about quite a bit. Especially after that little re-formation hurricane Ike gave us a few weeks back that left us in our new house with no power or internet. We headed to the big city in search of a coffee shop that had working wi-fi. Let me tell you, this was NO small feat in Western KY (the state not the jelly).

We both got all kinds of compliments on our bag handles from the 12 billion other desperate internet addicts there with their bags. Using a Bin Hog wrap is akin to the whole patch my coat/backpack craze of the 70’s, but way more hip, all the groove without all the grunge.

I LOVE this one:

I actually almost spewed my coffee all over the screen when I read that! I just wish it had some little skull and crossbones or a poison sign on either end of it. LOL The really neat thing about these is that they are made out of this hyper cool fabric called CORDURA® 1000D aka it is super strong and uberly durable. The best part is that there are SO many designs to choose from you are bound to find several you love, just like I did. I have been eyeballing the I Love Wine Wrap to go on our cloth picnic basket tote. Too cute! Personally, I think these would fun for school groups, like sports teams etc. to use for school pride on their bags too.

Anyways, the long and the short of it is that Bin Hog wraps rock, so get some today. With Christmas just around the corner, there are bound to be people you know traveling. So keep them safe in the baggage claim by transporting them to the Bin Hog zone!

First let me start by saying that I have had one form of an online business or web presence since 1998 and come from an IT background, so I have been through the gamut of web designers/developers and know the
internet. I have worked with the worst and the best of them. When I say the best, Marr is right up there on the top of the heap. Not only is she professional, she makes amazingly cool stuff. She “got” me and
my idea for Weird Stuff In My Desk, she actually listened to what I was saying. Better yet, she created something completely unique to my site that I absolutely LOVE! My blog isn’t a cookie cutter site slapped together by some hack. Marr is the real deal, she’s a professional who does this full time for a LIVING.

Product Mini View: Amber Lotion Bar Lancaster Soaps

Okay this is a mini “view” of a great product I have been hording since ohhh say the first of the year! LOL

It is a lotion bar (yes, I know, I don’t like lotion bars) made by Lancaster Soaps, but can only purchased (to the best of my knowledge, so google me) at The Sibling Group website. The bar I am featuring today is their Amber scent. Now, as many of you amber lovers know, there are about 80 billion different versions of this scent. But the one true amber that I love the most is the type you get in the witchy stores that is sold amber cubes that you just set out in a dish. MAN that stuff smells erotic or is that exotic? Either way, that is the only version I like of it.

So, when I received this mini lotion bar in the mail, I thought eh…jut another lotion bar and ehhh just another amber scent. So, being the mental giant I can sometimes be, I set it aside for weeks. Then one day whilst on a rather unpleasant phone call, I spied my treasure….my soon to become new preciousssss. I whipped that baby open and took a big whiff. YES! Score one for Lancaster Soaps, they have a dead on duplicate of my favorite resin scent ever.

Ahh sweet harmony filled the airwaves as I smoothed this scent all over me and hung up on the rat bastage who was harshing my mellow. As far as lotion sticks go, this is pretty groovy. It isn’t too oily which is my biggest pet peeve about, well, just about anything. LOL It is a bit hard at first which is a tell tale sign it has beeswax. Which is good in the summer cause they don’t melt in your purse (hopefully). And unofficially I think it acts as kind of a preservative to the scent. (do NOT quote me on that)

I give this lotion bar 4 out of 5 stars, and the scent 10 out of 5 stars. Way to go, now I hope they make some other products with this scent. Get on over and find yours today! Sibling Group, it’s the place to shop!

E-tailer Review: Starring….! Fragrances

Holy mother of rock stars bat buddies, hang on to your hats for this company. Starring Fragrances is owned and operated out of Los Angeles by two bombshell babes, Ashley and Courtney Peldon. These ladies are not only gorgeous on the outside, they are sweet as pie and have hearts of gold. No matter how many orders I place or how often I whine, they always give me the royal treatment. (not that whine a lot mind you lol)

Their amazing and ever expanding product line is aways offering something new and unique. And they are environmentally conscientious. Which gives them a 5 star rating in my book. Orders are shipped fast, packed with minimal but reliable packaging and have always been a treat to receive. My last order was no exception. Mostly because I bought my favorite coconut scented product on the FACE of the earth (how’s that for dramatic effect girls?). The ladies at Starring have found a scent that makes me (and my hubby) drool. Like Pavlov’s dog, when I see the words Coconut Vanilla Custard Creme, I must shop. And shop I did.

I picked up a set of their shampoo and conditioner in my favorite scent (see drooling above). CONDGratulations Jojoba Conditioner does amazing things to my scalp and hair. My scalp is whacky, so I have to be careful of what I use on it, or whacky becomes and understatement. Suffice to say, I have had no issues of wackedness (new word) since using this conditioner. Daily use is not a problem either. It leaves no residue or oily feeling and rinses out like a shamp err champ. Speaking of shampoo, their Lady is a Shamp line is really quite spectacular. It lathers like a dream, rinses easily and the scent lingers in my hair for the remainder of the day.

The thing I LOVE about Starring is that you can request your scent strength on most of their products. Which my friends, means they are pretty darn fresh if not made to order daily. Of course we have already established that I am a scent ho, and a shopping trip here always makes my heart flutter. Booking is the strongest you can get it, and that is what I did. WOW! When they say strong they mean it. But there is lighter scenting available for you shy types. Of course I am about as shy as a brick….but I digress (again). So, to sum it up, this is a shampoo and conditioner I can endorse and feel good about it, and it has a permanent home in my shower.

Next up is one of their newer products that I got a sample of (oh yes you can buy sample sizes!) called….this really makes me giggle….Pit Stop! Quite a clever play on words if I do say so myself. It is an all natural stick deodorant. Now, let me first say that I have tried a TON of different “natural” deodorants and none have ever really worked out in a pleasant way for me. So, I was pretty skeptical about this one. Here’s how it works; it is a “vegetable based deodorant that contains no aluminum or bactericides that can be a concern with long term use. This stick deodorant has a vegetable protein that neutralizes the enzymes that cause odor to a simple salt.” You can pick your scent when you buy a full size version, how freaking cool is that? No more “baby’s butt fresh” or “springtime rain drain” boring scents from the grocery store.

My sample was “The Romantic” which is a yummy marshmallow scent. I would opt for say something more along the lines of Coconut Vanilla Custard Creme on my next full size purchase. And something brighter for the summer. I want you to know that I worked this stuff out. I have been packing and sorting stuff getting ready for our move. And it is the middle of summer so things were pretty heated. The Pit Stop held up really well most of the day under the most dire of conditions. If you are a super sweaty stinker, you may want to add another dose after freshening up later in the day. But for everyday round about time in your air conditioned office scene, this will do the job nicely. This goes into the shopping basket for my next spree.

My other long time favorite from Starring is their With a Cherry on Top scent. Soooo I ended up with a sample of their Bar Belle in that scent. I really don’t enjoy lotion bars for a variety of reasons. Mainly consistency between e-tailers can be VERY different. Either too oily, or too hard to smooth on. This was right in between and just right. Of course I love the smell, so that was a bonus. They aren’t oily and they moisturize well. If you are a lotion bar fan, check them out.

Included in my box was a little sample of their 3-in-1 shower gel which is called You Don’t Shea. The yummy scent was orange sherbet. Again, not a big gel fan, but this was pretty nice. Medium thickness and lathered really well. Of course it smelled really good. I would more than likely use it for shampoo or bubble bath….ohhh dang! Bubble bath, great idea (no wonder they call it 3-in-1 lol). It looks like it is on sale right now too, get over there and grab some!

So, of course I save the best for last. Because you really cannot have a review of Starring Fragrances without reviewing their perfumes! Which is what got me hooked in the first place! I have two of their best sellers on hand right now (the rest are packed sorry folks), The Femme Fatale and The Bombshell. “Each fragrance is blended with your choice of certified organic grape alcohol or our succulent organic oil blend. Inside each bottle you will find a genuine star gemstone that infuses the bottle with nature’s positive energy.” I love the fact that you can choose an oil over an alcohol. I get a bit sick to my stomach with some alcohol based perfumes. Just thinking about it gives me a hurl reflex. Not so with the alternative organic oil based blend at Starring.

The Femme Fatale is a very classy vanilla scent, with just a hint of amber as to not over power the vanilla. The Bombshell is much bolder and you can really smell the orchid, but it isn’t nauseating like some strong florals tend to be. I have another favorite scent, and by now, I HOPE you know what it is without me saying it. LOL The oil blend base tends to last longer on my skin which is normal. It is NOT oily at all and is nice. Personally for the amount of perfume you get these fragrances are a steal. $26.00 for an entire ounce. It would be over a hundred bucks for a full ounce in a department store. Oh and mass produced, unlike these lovelies. If you try nothing else from Starring Fragrances, at least try the perfume, with a fragrance list as long as the Sunset Strip, you are bound to find something you like.

These ladies are definitely leaders in the bath and body industry. If you don’t like to shop online you can find them in a variety of Whole Foods Markets and other stores. Not sure what to try on your first trip? There are ton of sample options here for your pleasure. Be sure to sign up for their newsletter as they send out some lovely specials once and awhile.

I just got two amazing products from Crater Lake Company last week that I have been test driving on my skin for your benefit (I am so selfless don’t you agree?). First, a word on the packaging and presentation. Everything arrived in a timely manner, which is always a plus for me. The box had a plastic bag inside with my items, the bag had just a small amount of paper crinkle and a few faux flower petals, tied off with a lovely pink ribbon. Normally I don’t like extra plastic, but in this case, it was needed because there was a scrub in the box. If it had leaked (which it didn’t), the bag would have protected the box. There was also a hand written note thanking me, which is a nice extra touch. The labeling is presented well, in the company colors, understated and classy. The scrub label has held up in the shower which always pleases me. The lotion has a white pearlescent cap, which I really dig. It is something different that I haven’t seen in a cap.

Now on with the shooooowwwwww. I received a Sugar Cloud soft and gentle foaming scrub. I love foaming scrubs, and am now on the hunt for new and unique products. This definitely fits the bill so to speak. The scent is Black Crack Sand Beach, okay it really doesn’t *say* crack, but O.M.G it is addictive like crack (or at least from what I have heard about crack addiction). This is an ultimate summer scent, that I can envision on my scent palette all year round. This is the scent description from the site “Intoxicatingly rich and velvety smooth, this is unlike any other tropical coconut scents you’ve ever sniffed. Rich and pure black vanilla blends beautifully with creamy coconut milk while ribbons of cantaloupe’s sweet juice swirl around to give this blend a delightful element of sweetness. Its sweet unhurried dry down is lush carrying you to your own private island getaway.” This is all that and a bag of chips. To me, I don’t smell cantaloupe, but it really smells more like coconut with a light dash of watermelon. I want this in shampoo and conditioner, and sooner will be better than later. The scrub itself is not overly oily and a medium thickness making it easy to scoop out while I am blind in the shower. LOL It is a bit more oily than I like personally, but not enough so to deter me from purchasing it in other scents (and more of this one). It was also sealed with a safety seal under the lid which is a bonus, thanks for doing that CLC! The funny thing is that there was a little white tic-tac looking thing in the top that I of course had to investigate. I was assured that it wasn’t a tic-tac, but a cute little white candy decoration. Very cute presentation that is for sure!

Next in my box o’ goods was a lotion! You all know what a ho for lotion I can be, so I was slathering the minute I got my hands on the bottle. This particular product is their Aloe Smoothie Hand and Body Lotion. I was so glad for something with Aloe in it that I almost cried tears of relief! The lotion is fairly thick but not so bad that you can’t squeeze it easily out of the bottle. Of course, being the addict I am, I immediately put way too much on, and was afraid it wasn’t going to soak in. So, while I looked around for something to wipe the excess off of my feet (because of course there was NOTHING next to my bed), the miracle cream sunk in and did my bidding. I looked down and was getting ready to wipe it on my sheet (sshhhh) and it was gone! LOL This is now a new favorite lotion formula. Needless to say a little dab will do ya! I suppose I *have* to tell you about the luscious sent that I slathered on…..oh alright! Coconut Bavarois! Yes, score another yummy coconut scent. Out of the two I still prefer the Black Sand Beach, but this is pretty darn yummy. I had NO clue what Bavarois was, but it had to be good and it is.

All in all, I really loved my products from Crater Lake Company, and see many orders in my future. They have a scent list a mile long and the price is very competitive and fair. The current turn around time is about 10-12 days and they keep that updated on the front page of their site. I highly recommend this company and their products. I really think you will enjoy them too.

Well I’ll be dipped and double stitched! I have found the most glorious source for textiles! Flying Needle Gallery is a tip top establishment that provides amazing patterns, quality material and unique items. I was so enamored with my recent shipment of Colorchiefs, I actually took them right to the table and put them on to try out the look. I am always on the lookout for ways to help lessen my impact on the environment. Cloth napkins are HIGH on my list of must haves for the eco-conscious. I received the 17″ x 17″ dinner napkins in the Oriental Blossoms and Branches pattern. These gorgeous cloths are made with 100% pre-shrunk cotton and are super stitched along all edges front and back. They also work really well. Some cloth napkins are stiff and non absorbent. Not so with these lovelies. Just swipe, wipe and you are clean as whistle!

I will definitely be getting more sets, as a matter of fact I am sensing the sock monkey set in my future! Check them out.

How cute are they? And they will go perfectly with my dark brown table cloth! Another item that I have been coveting (hint my birthday is next week) is this stunning chocolate colored scarf!

The service was impeccable, the packing is minimalistic fitting right in with the eco-friendly theme I was seeking, the pricing is fair for handmade quality items. Why shop large mass market department stores for your textiles, when there is Flying Needle Gallery? Really there is NO reason to hand over money to the faceless conglomerates.
