Blog Roll

Savoring Saturday

April 30, 2011

Friday was a no blog day because of the Kidney stone of doom. I slept and then later at night well during the witching hour (which some say it is all 24 of them for me :D _) I read. It was also when I had the Hagen Dazs sugar overdose lol.

Of course there is more Great Aunt baby cuteness here in this picture. This is Evelyn meeting her new little sister Jillian. OMG how darn cute is that. Evelyn is just enraptured by her. Have you ever seen anyting so cute?

So, early Saturday in the wee hours I spent my time dozing and reading a new book that is going to be coming out by author Melissa de La Cruz called Witches of East End this is going to be a new adult series for her. Melissa primarily only writes young adult paranormal books. I finished the book in an evening/morning. It was pretty damn good. I haven’t read her Blue Bloods YA series so I don’t have anything to compare her previous writing to. Which I am glad about. This isn’t a review of the book. Some lucky reviewer is going to take care of that for you. But I will say this is definitely worth picking up. Melissa has created a very unique new spin on witchcraft and created an alternate world that is pretty interesting, passionate without being seedy, mysterious without being too over the top, a world a person could come to love and buy into.

I also played Words With Friends with one friend and a bunch of people I don’t know at all. Won a few games lost several more. It is like Scrabble and it is an iTunes game. I am playing the free version.  It is pretty fun if you can get people to play their moves. I kind of like Lexulous on Facebook more because if somebody is inactive for a long while you can nudge them to play their turn. I really love playing Scrabble. THERE something you may not have known about me.

Oh! We only had two more unsubscribes over the last day and half or so. I bet we lose a few over the Kidney stone post. LMFAO. :)

What else…. oh yeah! I hope to watch the current episode of Sanctuary that aired last Monday. We didn’t know it changed days, so I am hoping the DVR caught it. We watched the episode from the week before last night. Because thanks to the fucking hackers getting past the “thank you SONY PS3 for keeping our credit card data and personal data safe from dickwads” we couldn’t watch bones or netflix. Though I do suppose I could hook up to my laptop. I have the “CORD” I can never remember the name of it. Maybe I will do that!

DH has to work all weekend so I am on my own again. Which funnily enough is the name of one of his songs. Hey, maybe that isn’t so funny….hmmmm :D

So that’s a wrap!

What are you doing for Saturday? Any of you watching Sanctuary? What books are you reading? Or playing Words With Friends or other favorite online games?

Hump Day Delights

April 27, 2011

Wednesday again!

Didn’t seem to get too many takers on my stimulating posts yesterday. Had a few unsubscribes. LOL Probably wondering who the hell I was. Especially since there hasn’t been a post since uh lets see….October!

I am gearing up for a big event tomorrow over at http://bittenbybooks.com with author Charlaine Harris. She writes the Sookie Stackhouse books that the HBO hit series TrueBlood is based on. Good Gods did I just sound like a radio announcer (but in print) just now?

Charlaine is a gem to work with and it means so very much to me that she would carve out a few hours of her over packed and much coveted schedule to meet with our readers. Truly generous if you ask me. I don’t know how she does it all, talk about a woman who everybody wants a piece of. I pray she gets some peace and relaxation. Though that doesn’t seem likely with book 11 in her series releasing here in a week or so and a tour coming up.

The neat thing is that her assistant is her best friend! how cool would that be? To work with your long time best friend. At least you could bitch about things and not worry about offending your employee. LMFAO. I always tell people I have to get busy or the boss will fire me. (me being the boss) or my boss is a total bitch.

I am NOT saying that is the case with Charlaine! LOL That’s how I treat my only employee, which is myself…. I wonder if I can bring a case against myself and win some money…. hmmm

Anyways, I am totally rambling.

How many of you read the Sookie books or watch True Blood?

Or how many of you work with your best friend? Do you love it or hate it?

Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies: Compendium Monstrum by Suzanne Schwalb and Margaret Rubiano

October 16, 2010

This fun pocket-sized field guide should be a part of any monster hunter’s or monster curious fan’s reference library. It is recommended to be included in any survival kit as it contains invaluable information on how to deal with the dreaded confrontation with Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies.

There is a section for each creature which includes the mythology and history, different types of creatures and the geographical location in which they are found. Also included are warning signs, tracking guides and surviving the threat.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a great little field guide that is chock full of information. It will provide you with everything you need to know when tracking these monsters or surviving an unexpected meeting. It also features a handy section to record evidence of sightings.

I was very pleased with the look and feel of the book. It measures about 4’x6’, has a hardcover, a ribbon marker and the paper is of a substantially weighted stock. It is the perfect size to slip in your pocket. The layout is pleasing to the eye, and the fold out maps and illustrations are stunning.

The book is lighthearted and fun but it also explores the history and mythology as well as first known literary references in each category. Some of my favorite sections were warning signs, helpful phrases and zombie indicators. I have included a brief example of each:

“Werewolf Warning Signs
Is the subject partial to donning floral nightgowns and caps? Does it turn around several times before lying down? Does the subject loathe vegetarians, except when paired with a fine Bordeaux?

Say it in Romanian; Helpful Phrases
I need a doctor quickly, “E nevoie de un doctor, repede”
Blood Transfusion, “Transfuzie de sange.”

Zombie Indicators
Limited vocabulary; groaning
Is the subject attracted to you for your (say it mit uns now) “Braiiinnnsss!”?”
